Claude Code is no longer just a CLI!
Boris Cherny’s explanation is key: Claude Code started as a CLI, but Anthropic soon discovered that engineers were very picky about tool entry.
So it later grew into different portals such as desktop, mobile, iOS/Android, Slack, and GitHub.
This illustrates a trend: The competitive point of AI coding agents is not just whether the model can write code, but whether it can enter every interface where engineers actually work.
This is how Plan Mode came about.
It’s not about designing functions first and then giving them to users; it’s about trying them over and over again in different usage scenarios, and finally settling on truly useful interaction patterns.
